Sarees are part of the daily wardrobe in India. They are chosen for special occasions from the birth of a child to weddings. They are also varied in style and material and worn in a variety of ways, making them an integral part of Indian culture and aesthetics.

This necklace is hand-crafted from wooden prayer beads covered in an up-cycled silk saree fabric, ties in the back allow one to wear the necklace at any length. It is a lightweight, zero-waste—not to mention beautiful—product.

When reaching out to different vendors, I had a few criteria in mind for the wide array of products that Spice Trail would be carrying:

  1. It had to be made in India and of great quality.

  2. It had to be practical.

  3. It had to support the art and artisans of Indian, and where possible, preferably women.

The vendor that these necklaces and a few other things were sourced from seems to share our vision, since their purpose is to provide fairly-paid, dignified, and sustainable livelihood opportunities to marginalized women, with the objective of empowering them to achieve economic independence and create better lives for themselves, their families and their communities.
