We keep a collage of pictures hanging on a large frame that has bunch of clips. It probably has over 50 pictures and I had forgotten this one was on it. This is less than a month before I got married and less than a year before I would be in the US. Every immigrant has their own story. Mine has been an amazing journey.

I landed in this country not knowing any spoken English. I say that because Indians are taught English as a subject from kindergarten and most of us have a very good grasp of the written language and vocabulary. However, most of us alps not really use it in day to day life, so speaking in English was impossible for me. Then you throw in the American accent and vocabulary and that’s a whole different ballgame. I learnt my English and cultural nuances from American TV, watching news, all the shows on TVLand (to this day I love watching I Love Lucy, I Dream of Genie, Bewitched, The Brady Bunch!), Friends and by reading. I had always loved reading. I just had to force myself to read in English, and I discovered a whole different world.

Having lived in this country for 23 years, all I can say is that people have been very kind to me. I would get lost (multiple times, on a single trip to the community college), and they would guide me back on my route as I’d ask in my halting English for directions. This was before even MapQuest. Professors were so very patient at the community college and also when I transferred to Syracuse University to go over materials. And, now coming to the crux of it, you guys have all floored me with your support and love and generosity. I love hearing from all of you, getting suggestions, ideas and tips. Keep them coming.

Much love,
Sujata Shahi Singh
